State of Fashion

State of Fashion is an international fashion platform that connects pioneers in fashion design, research and business, and shares their ideas and innovations with the world. They stand for critical reflection on common positions and models in the fashion industry. With a biennial, discussion programs, labs for design research, exhibitions and publications, they bring visionary ideas from the Netherlands and abroad together. Together with designers, companies, scientists, educators, consumers and other stakeholders in fashion, they actively explore an urgently needed new fashion system.

State of Fashion explicitly connects fashion to the social issues and to challenges of our time: inclusivity and fair practice, the impact of globalization, and the climate crisis. How can fashion contribute to a solution to these problems and to a better world? They examine how the fashion behaviour of people worldwide can bring about change, in such a way that fashion plays a meaningful, positive role in the lives of all people, anywhere in the world, whether you are a fashion designer, a textile worker, a retailer or a citizen in a shopping street.

State of Fashion works closely with partners from the Netherlands and abroad to increase awareness of the current challenges in the fashion system and to bring about actual change.

Remake World

As a thought leader in sustainable and ethical fashion practices, Remake World aims to lead a global movement for climate justice and workers’ rights. Through a coalition of activists, business leaders, brands, and partnering organisations, they support a shared goal of building a transparent and accountable fashion industry. With the help of their allies, they will bring much-needed systemic change and create a more ethical and sustainable industry. Together, they believe that we can turn fashion into a force for good.

How They Make a Difference

  • Educate + Empower: They educate and empower the next generation of workers’ rights and climate justice activists through our worldwide ambassador program. They produce articles and short films highlighting garment makers and amplifying their voices, and share these with the broader community through intensive educational workshops as well as outreach via social and traditional media.

  • Drive Transparency: They investigate supply chain integrity, environmental impact, and corporate diversity and hold brands accountable by offering their Seal of Approval to those businesses which meet their standards. They alert consumers to brands which don’t and engage in dialogues with brands about how they can do better.

  • Advocate: They lead their community to rally, campaign, and advocate on behalf of garment makers and the environment. Current and past campaigns include demanding fair wages for garment workers via petitioning state governments, holding brands accountable with the #PayUp Fashion movement, and inspiring greater environmental and ethical consumer awareness through the #NoNewClothes challenge.
